Veddahs, believed to be the remnants of the original Neolithic inhabitants of the island Lives particularly in the forests of Bintenne near Mahiyangana.

Veddah in English means Aborigine. Veddahs hunts only for part of their daily fare. And they would supplement their diet with yams & fruits. They preserve the meat dried & dripped in honey for the off season. Veddahs lives in harmony with nature, hunting animals only for food. And most of the plants, vines are used as medicines to treat ailments & wounds.

When a couple weds, it’s not a major event & when a person dies, the burial is simple Among Veddahs. No one goes hungry as they hunt for the whole clan.

And the Veddahs’ language which some linguists postulate might have been a major contributor to Sihala itself, it is on the verge of vanishing forever much like the Veddahs themselves.
